Sword Art Online: Game gets re-release for Smartphone

Bandai Namco Entertainment announced this Wednesday (18) that the game Sword Art Online Variant Showdown , developed for smartphones, is now available again in its re-released version. To mark the return, the company released a new trailer highlighting the new features.

The re-release brings improved mechanics, interface improvements and the addition of three-player co-op battles. Additionally, the main story is fully voiced, offering an immersive experience for fans.

The game originally debuted in November 2022, but had to be taken offline in September 2023 for extended maintenance due to critical bugs. Now, with the issues resolved, players can enjoy a renewed experience.

Sword Art Online Variant Showdown game story

The story revolves around Cross Edge , a game created by a young high school prodigy. Kirito, the protagonist, hears two intriguing rumors about this title. The first is about a mysterious player who unexpectedly appears to attack, causing the loss of part of his victims' memories. The second rumor speaks of a hooded player who hides his eyes, reminding Kirito of the feared Laughing Coffin guild, faced in Sword Art Online . Driven by curiosity, Kirito and his friends decide to investigate, but soon find themselves in the middle of a surprise attack.

Therefore, this re-release also celebrates 10 years of the Sword Art Online , reinforcing the importance of the franchise for the otaku community.

Finally, with improvements and new features, Variant Showdown promises to attract both longtime fans and new players, further consolidating SAO's legacy in the mobile gaming universe.
