Online Sword Art fans can now prepare: Light Novel written by Reki Kawahara will win a live-action TV series. The news gained confirmation through The Hollywood Reporter , which revealed that American broadcaster Skydance Television has acquired the rights of the franchise.
The project will feature weight names in production. The screenwriter and executive producer will be Laeta Kalogidis, known for her work in Avatar, Alita: Combat Angel and the Terminator: Genesis. She will be next to David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross, who also assume executive production positions.
Sword Art Online was born as a light novel in 2009 and quickly became a phenomenon. With over 19 million copies sold around the world and 22 published volumes, the work gained even more notoriety with the anime premiere in 2012, which won a solid foundation of fans and helped popularize the Isekai genre.
The expectation now is knowing how the universe of SAO will be adapted to live-action screens, and if the new production will be able to capture the essence that has made the series so dear.
