Sword Art Online Ordinal Scale Movie Announced in Japan

It was announced during the Dengeki Bunko Haru no Saiten 2016 event this weekend that Sword Art Online will be getting a movie scheduled to arrive in 2017. This new movie is titled Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale and is scheduled to arrive in Japanese theaters in 2017.

Also revealed at the event were further details about the film: " Ordinal Scale"  is the name of a game after "Sword Art Online" and "Gun Gale Online." The game uses a new augmented reality device called "Augma," specifically designed for mobile. The game has a unique feature where players can increase their rank by defeating monsters and using items.

Yoshitsugu Matsuoka will return as Kirito and Haruka Tomatsu as Asuna. This new film will tell a new story after the Rosario Arc.
Reki Kawahara 's Sword Art Online light novel series spawned two TV series in 2012 and 2014, as well as a 2013 TV special, Sword Art Online: Extra Edition. The franchise also includes several manga adaptations and spinoffs, and three video games. A fourth game will be released in 2016.
