Actress Sydney Sweeney is in final negotiations to star in the highly anticipated live-action Gundam , produced by Legendary in partnership with Bandai Namco Filmworks .
However, the film will be directed and written by Jim Mickle Sweet Tooth series . In addition to directing, Mickle will also produce the project alongside Linda Moran , through the production company Nightshade.
For those unfamiliar, Gundam is one of the most iconic franchises in Japanese science fiction. Launched in 1979 with the anime Mobile Suit Gundam , created by Yoshiyuki Tomino , the series became a global phenomenon, expanding into animated films, manga, novels, games, toys, and collectible models. However, the original plot takes place in the so-called Universal Century , a distant future where space colonies fight for independence from Earth using enormous robots called Mobile Suits .
The project was originally announced in 2021, with Jordan Vogt-Roberts ( Kong: Skull Island ) attached as director. However, no details about the story or characters were revealed, and Legendary declined to officially comment on its progress.
Meanwhile, Sweeney continues to accumulate projects. She recently starred in the films Madame Web and Immaculate , and is also confirmed for the new season of HBO's Euphoria
