Hunter x Hunter author reveals possible ending for the manga

I'm a technology enthusiast and a lover of anime, manga, and games. The vast majority of anime I enjoy belong to the Shounen demographic.

Yoshihiro Togashi, the creator of the manga "Hunter X Hunter," revealed on the talk show "Iwakura to Yoshizumi no Bangumi" that he conceived four possible scenarios for ending the manga.

In a letter read during the program, Togashi shared that he had developed three possible endings. During the program, he presented a fourth possible ending, indicating that it could be considered the conclusion should he pass away before formally finishing the manga. Togashi is 57 years old.

The fourth ending (“ending D”) takes place after a time jump, years in the future. Mirroring the beginning of the manga, a girl named Gin is fishing in a lake and catches a huge fish. She proudly takes the fish to her mother, declaring that her mother can never again ask her to become a hunter, before leaving her mother with the fish. The mother discusses Gin's future with her father, expressing disappointment that her daughter doesn't want to follow in the footsteps of her famous grandfather Gon and become a hunter.

After a scene change, Gin reveals that she doesn't want to become a hunter because of how often her grandfather Gon left her grandmother Nouko alone at home during his hunter adventures. She vows never to leave the island and to always stay by someone's side, as a boy enters the room.

The final scene of ending D shows a bird flying away into the sky while someone watches.

Togashi hoped to devise a sufficiently satisfying ending so as not to have to resort to the possible endings A, B, or C, anticipating a mixed reception from the public. He believed that reader reactions would be 80% positive for ending A, split equally for ending B, and 90% negative for ending C. (He clarified that he personally didn't think ending A would be highly rated by readers, only that it would be the "safe," uncontroversial ending.) Despite the overwhelming criticism he would receive from fans, Togashi personally preferred ending C among the options.

Finally, the manga went on hiatus in January, citing the author's health problems.
