At the 2024 Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli The Boy and the Heron as Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards ceremony. The film was competing against Elements, Nimona, Robot Dreams, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in the category. Sadly, Miyazaki and producer Toshio Suzuki were unable to attend to accept the award in person. This is Miyazaki's second film to win, following Spirited Away in 2003.

Synopsis

The Boy and the Heron is inspired by the story of Genzaburo Yoshino , published in 1937. However, the book's story follows the journey of Copper, a 15-year-old boy who goes on a great quest to discover the meaning of life. Miyazaki, however, stated that his film will have a different story.

Thus, The Boy and the Crane won the Best Animated Feature Film category at the 81st Golden Globe Awards earlier this year. The Alliance of Women Film Journalists awarded it the Best Animated Feature Film award at its EDA Awards on December 31. The 78th Mainichi Film Awards announced before its ceremony on February 14 that the film will receive the Noburou Oofuji Award, which honors animated works that offer new forms of creative expression.

The Boy and the Heron premiered in Brazil on February 22nd. The film also received nominations for the Annie Awards (for animated feature, directing, and screenplay) and the British Academy Film Awards (for animated film).
