The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli and the Heron Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards ceremony. The film was competing against Elements, Nimona, Robot Dreams, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in the category. Unfortunately, Miyazaki and producer Toshio Suzuki were unable to accept the award in person. This is Miyazaki's second film to win, following Spirited Away in 2003.

Synopsis
The Boy and the Heron is inspired by the story of Genzaburo Yoshino 1937 novel. However, the book's story follows the journey of Copper, a 15-year-old boy who goes on a journey to discover the meaning of life. However, Miyazaki has stated that his film will tell a different story.
Thus, The Boy and the Crane won the Best Animated Feature category at the 81st Golden Globe Awards earlier this year. The Alliance of Women Film Journalists awarded it the Best Animated Feature award at its EDA Awards on December 31st. The 78th Mainichi Film Awards announced ahead of its February 14th ceremony that the film will receive the Noburou Oofuji Award, which honors animated works that offer new forms of creative expression.
The Boy and the Crane premiered in Brazil on February 22. Finally, the film also received nominations from the Annie Awards (for animated feature, direction and screenplay) and the British Academy Film Awards (for animated film).
