Director Paul WS Anderson, known for the film adaptation of Resident Evil , is preparing for another project inspired by horror video games. In collaboration with Sega, Anderson will be responsible for the film version of The House of the Dead . The zombie shooter game franchise marked a generation in the 1990s. The news, reported by Deadline, promises to bring an intense experience to the cinema, focused on fast-paced action and the terrifying atmosphere of the game.

This adaptation will be Anderson's fourth video game production, having also directed Mortal Kombat (1995) and Monster Hunter (2020). According to the director, the plot will be inspired by The House of the Dead 3 , focusing on the story of Lisa Rogan, a young woman searching for her father, and Daniel Curien, who must deal with the dangers posed by his father. The film promises to deliver a faithful vision of the game's intensity, immersing the audience directly in the action.

Paul WS Anderson's experience with Resident Evil

In Resident Evil , Anderson established a unique style, combining horror and action, but with a more deliberate pace, alternating between puzzles and survival challenges. The new project, however, promises to follow a different format, reflecting the frenetic and direct nature of the first-person shooter.

In adapting the game, Anderson managed to capture its essence on screen, but the challenge now will be to create an even more immersive experience. In an interview, the director commented that, unlike Resident Evil , the action in The House of the Dead will be constant and in real time, keeping the audience at the center of the events.

What to expect from the plot of The House of the Dead

The plot of The House of the Dead focuses on two central characters: Lisa Rogan, who seeks to rescue her father, and Daniel Curien, who struggles to confront the legacy of his father, the one responsible for the mutant outbreak. Anderson stated that his approach will highlight the characters' personal conflicts, adding emotional layers to an action-packed storyline.

This new film also aims to explore the arcade game style, which became famous for its enemy-filled environments and the intense dynamics of "on-rails" (games where the trajectory is predetermined). Anderson promises a fast-paced narrative, mirroring the quick and instinctive gameplay of The House of the Dead .

Sega expands its cinematic universe

Sega, the video game giant, is increasingly investing in adapting its games for the big screen, seeking to expand its franchises to cinematic audiences. Following the success of Sonic the Hedgehog , the company announced that it is developing projects based on other series, including Shinobi .

Toru Nakahara, head of film production at Sega, highlighted the importance of these adaptations in expanding the brand's universe. According to Nakahara, the Sonic helped open doors for new productions, thus changing the company's stance regarding licensing and partnerships.

Resident Evil and the legacy of video game adaptations

Anderson's new project also inevitably draws comparisons to the legacy of Resident Evil , one of the director's best-known adaptations. Across several films, the franchise has established itself as one of the most popular in the niche of video game adaptations, influencing the horror genre in its transition to the screen. Although Resident Evil followed a more puzzle-based structure, the film emerges with a proposal of non-stop action and a format that aims to capture the essence of the game.

With no release date set or details about the cast, the project still generates anticipation among fans of the genre. Anderson, however, has demonstrated his intention to respect the essence of the game, which suggests that The House of the Dead could, in fact, become a landmark among video game adaptations for the cinema.
