The Game Awards 2024 honored the best games, studios and professionals in the industry on Thursday night (12). In a ceremony full of surprises, the event highlighted productions that marked the year, awarding titles such as Astro Bot, chosen as Game of the Year, and Metaphor: ReFantazio, winner in several categories.

The event also recognized Helldivers 2 as the top name among multiplayer games, while Balatro shone in the indie categories. Additionally, Batman: Arkham Shadow took home the Best VR/AR Game award, showcasing the strength of virtual reality in 2024.

Key winners and trends

Among the most anticipated awards, Astro Bot was also chosen as Best Family Game and Best Game Direction, solidifying its place as a highlight of the year. Metaphor: ReFantazio won for Best Art Direction, Best RPG, and Best Narrative, captivating audiences with its creative approach and engaging story.

In esports, League of Legends maintained its dominance as Best Esports Game, while Faker, from the T1 team, was crowned Best Athlete. Furthermore, the title of Best Team also went to T1, reaffirming the organization's dominance in the competitive scene.

However, another surprise was the victory of Balatro, which not only secured the award for Best Indie Debut, but also won Best Mobile Game and Best Independent Game, demonstrating the impact of independent games on the industry.

Technical and narrative highlights

In technical categories, Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 shone in Best Performance, with Melina Juergens, and Best Audio Design, reinforcing its production quality. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth secured the award for Best Soundtrack, winning over fans and critics alike.

The Innovation in Accessibility award went to Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, highlighting the industry's commitment to more inclusive experiences. Meanwhile, the highly anticipated GTA 6 was chosen as the Most Anticipated Game, fueling excitement for next year.
