"For me, Guilty Crown was an unfortunate anime. Everything we achieved with that series, all the effort we put into it… I feel it was undervalued. It was a very frustrating experience," explained the director.
He also highlighted the impact of the harsh criticism:
We did incredible and challenging things, but in the end, it all came down to people calling the anime a "failure" and "trash." It was hard to swallow.
However, Araki didn't just lament. He made it clear that he still holds the ambition to create an original anime that is an absolute success:
I always say that I want to make an original anime that truly impresses. I haven't managed to do it yet, but I'm determined to achieve that goal.
The director also stated that he has already identified the mistakes in Guilty Crown and is eager to prove that he has learned from them.
I know exactly where we went wrong, but I haven't yet had the chance to demonstrate it in my work. I want to show what I'm capable of in my next project!.
After Guilty Crown , Araki directed other original projects, such as Koutetsujou no Kabaneri , Bubble , and COLORs , as well as adaptations of Attack on Titan produced by WIT STUDIO . However, his statements have divided opinions among fans. While some argue that the anime was treated unfairly, others point out evident narrative flaws.
Check out what fans are saying about Guilty Crown:

- The only thing I remember is that the protagonist lost his arm.
- Araki is amazing visually, but his stories are mediocre. Maybe he should focus on adaptations.
- If the script were better, Guilty Crown would be flawless. The story is what truly matters.
Despite the criticism, Guilty Crown continues to be remembered, which, in a way, is already a kind of success. Araki seems determined to overcome his past failures and deliver something that truly makes a mark on the industry.
