The staff of the anime franchise Hibike! Euphonium (Sound! Euphonium) revealed today at the “Hibike! Euphonium 5-kaime da yo! Uji de Omatsuri Festival” event in Kyoto that Kyoto Animation is working on a new project that will focus on Kumiko's third year of high school. However, the format of this “new project” was not revealed at the event. Will it be a series, OVA, or film?
The anime's character designer, Shoko Ikeda, drew an illustration to commemorate the news.
The author of the light novel, Ayano Takeda, published the story of Kumiko's third year in high school in two volumes. The first was released on April 17th and the second on June 22nd.
The anime series Hibike! Euphonium (Sound! Euphonium) had two seasons that aired on Japanese TV in 2015 and 2016. The anime inspired the Gekijō-ban Hibike! Euphonium: Kitauji Kōkō Suisōgaku-Bu e Yōkoso Film “flashback” in April 2016.
The story begins when Kumiko Omae, a girl who was in the middle school marching band, visits the high school marching band as a newcomer. Kumiko's classmates, Hazuki and Sapphire, decide to join the band, but Kumiko sees her former classmate Reina there and hesitates. She remembers an incident she had with Reina at the marching band competition in middle school…
The Kitauji Music Club used to advance to national competitions, but since the advisor changed, they haven't been able to progress beyond the Kansai tournament. However, thanks to the rigorous instruction of a newly appointed advisor, the students are progressively improving. The daily lives of the club members are full of ups and downs, including struggles over solos and the decision to give up club activities to focus on their studies.
Kyoto Animation announced two new anime films for the franchise in 2017. The Liz and the Blue Bird film, centered on Mizore Yoroizuka and Nozomi Kasaki, premiered in Japan in April 2018.
The second new film, Sound! Euphonium The Movie – Our Promise: A Brand New Day (Hibike! Euphonium: Chikai no Finale), opened in Japan on April 19. The film follows Kumiko as a second-year student.
