Makoto Shinkai – Main Works
Byosoku Go-Senchimetoru: Here, we can start by highlighting this work that became known as 5 Centimeters per Second. It was released in 2007, but Makoto's success began much earlier, with Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho. However, I decided to start with this one because it's by far my favorite of all. With a romance that's anything but fictional, or should I say even too real? In any case, this is easily one of the most beautifully crafted romances of all time!
Kotonoha no Niwa: This one, released in 2013 as The Garden of Words, was a tremendous success. It featured an outstanding narrative and a captivating romance that was almost as tragic as the one above. It's worth highlighting Makoto's attention to developing each character uniquely, leaving no room for plot holes or lack of personality. Anyway, if you haven't seen this one, go check it out now.
Kimi no Na wa: This was definitely Makoto's biggest hit to date! Your Name went viral worldwide, making waves and gaining a legion of fans starting in 2016! So, you've probably already seen this film and still remember it, even after more than four years. So, I highly recommend rewatching this fantastic work of romance and fiction that touched the world.
Tenki no Ko: Now, to conclude our list, let's talk about the master's most recent work. This one was released in 2019 and was also a tremendous success. Also worth mentioning is the surreal ending, which makes us reflect on what truly matters. To avoid unnecessary spoilers, go watch this phenomenal work now.
