During a special interview with the official Dragon Ball , artist Toyotaro — responsible for the artwork in Dragon Ball Super — enthusiastically defended the much-debated Majin Buu Saga from Dragon Ball Z.

The conversation took place to promote volume 24 of the manga, released in Japan on April 4, 2025, and featured Maria Makino, a member of the idol group Morning Musume '25.

Despite many fans viewing the saga critically, mainly due to Gohan's downfall, Toyotaro highlighted the positive aspects of this phase. According to him, "it's a saga rich in characters and full of creative freedom, since it was the last story Toriyama conceived for the series ." The artist also confessed that he draws a lot of inspiration from the visual style of that era in his own work.

However, in the interview, Makino, in turn, revealed that she loves the lighter moments of the saga, such as Gotenks' mishaps and Majin Buu creating his house. Despite the series revolving around Goku again—which frustrated those who expected more from Gohan—Toyotaro believes that this saga brings a unique depth to the franchise's universe.
