XDefiant, one of Ubisoft's most ambitious projects in recent years, will have its servers closed on June 3, 2025. The announcement, made by executive producer Mark Rubin in an official statement, surprised the gaming community that, since 2024, has been involved with the title. In the text released on December 3, 2024, Mark Rubin described the XDefiant journey as a bold challenge.

Ubisoft has guaranteed that players who purchased the Ultimate Founder's Pack or made purchases in the last 30 days will be refunded. The process will be automatic and must be completed within eight weeks. More details about returns are available on the game's official website.
The official statement and the challenges faced
The game sought to offer a different experience by rescuing the essence of arcade shooters and eliminating the controversial “skill-based matchmaking” (SBMM). Furthermore, the free model was focused on gaining a broad audience.
However, according to Rubin, despite the initial reception and successful engagement — with more than 15 million players registered in less than a year — the sustainability of the project became unfeasible. He acknowledged the difficulties in the market for free-to-play games and praised the development team for their efforts.
“Not all challenges lead to victory, but I hope that each developer involved is proud of what they achieved ,” said the executive. He highlighted the importance of maintaining open and respectful communication between creators and the community, something that, according to him, was what sets XDefiant apart.
XDefiant's legacy and its impact on the industry
Mark Rubin highlighted the positive impact that XDefiant had, even given its short duration. He mentioned that the game broke internal records at Ubisoft by becoming the fastest title to reach 5 million users. The community stood out for its direct connection and open dialogue, one of the game's greatest strengths.
Despite the end, the statement reinforces Rubin's vision about continuous learning and evolution of the gaming industry. He celebrated the community involvement and results achieved: “I hope everyone remembers XDefiant as a project that dared to challenge the status quo.”
Planned but impactful closure
With Season 3 still slated for release before the servers shut down, XDefiant bows out as an example of the challenges facing multiplayer games in today's competitive landscape. The bet on a free model brought impressive initial results, but failed to sustain the title in the long term.
