In episode 14 of the second season of the anime Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (Diaries of an Apothecary), released on April 11th, Maomao solved another mystery involving one of the high-ranking concubines. Furthermore, despite the bovine bezoar distracting her from the Jinshi's "frog," she won't be able to escape the fake eunuch anytime soon.
The previous episode was a breath of fresh air for Maomao and anime fans, who were able to rest their hearts after the iconic "frog scene." However, in this episode, the girl returned to her role as Jinshi's private detective and set off on an investigation at the Diamond Palace, where, apparently, there was a ghost.
In case you don't remember, in episode 13, Maomao encountered Lishu in the public bath area. This event generated some curiosity, since high-ranking concubines have bathtubs in their palaces. After talking to the concubine, the apothecary discovered that there was a ghost haunting the bath area of the Diamond Palace.
Thus, Maomao was once again tasked with solving the mystery. Diaries of an Apothecary is not a work that involves the supernatural; therefore, all cases are solved with some scientific explanation, as is the case with the "ghost" in this episode, which was actually just a reflection in the copper mirror – a relic left by Lishu's mother – and the steam that rose through the gap in the floor, generating wind and causing the curtain to sway.
In Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, ladies-in-waiting are not trustworthy.
So far, the anime has made it quite clear that, unfortunately, Lishu still suffers mistreatment from her ladies-in-waiting. This situation seems to be recurring in the story, as Lihua, one of the high-ranking concubines, has also experienced this.
The situation evokes compassion because, despite being a concubine of the Emperor, Lishu is just a little girl who is alone and needs to survive in a place that looks like a battlefield.
However, Jinshi took advantage of his trip to the Diamond Palace and resolved the problem, putting the ladies-in-waiting in their proper places once and for all, which made the episode worthwhile. Furthermore, the reprimand was so severe that even Maomao was afraid, and we know that's not something common.
What to expect from the next episode
The opening may have changed, but the quality hasn't. Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (Diaries of an Apothecary) doesn't disappoint, and the episodes deliver each scene with excellence, such as the moments when Maomao is excited about something or her genius in solving each mystery effectively.
The next episode will adapt chapter 68 of the manga, titled " The Eunuch of Rumors and the Ice Cream." In it, Maomao will show her talent by helping Xiaolan fix a terrible mistake. Furthermore, Jinshi is ready to try, once again, to reveal his true identity to the apothecary. Will he succeed?
