Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan's most respected and influential animators, being the co-founder of Studio Ghibli. Furthermore, he also directed Spirited Away , Princess Mononoke , and Howl's Moving Castle . Therefore, his latest film is a major milestone for his career and his fans.

The team of animators and producers worked with Miyazaki on the development of How Do You Live? since 2016. However, the film did not receive any trailers, and no details about its plot or visuals were revealed before its release. The only thing Studio Ghibli released was a poster.
According to Toshio Suzuki , the studio president, the decision to keep the film's information secret was deliberate. He says in an interview that Miyazaki wanted to keep the film's details under wraps to generate suspense.
“I’ve been making films ever since, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and that poster is the first thing that Miyazaki Hayao really praised me for. He said, ‘Suzuki-san, this is amazing.’”
He said it was the best thing I'd ever done. That was a clue. 'So, let's do this!' No trailers. Absolutely no TV commercials. We'll do everything. No newspaper ads!”
Synopsis:
