The manga “Sousou no Frieren (Frieren and the Journey to the Beyond)” has gone on an indefinite hiatus. However, fans are discussing the more specific details of the manga, and something that caught attention was an illustration of the character Fern (Sousou no Frieren) where she has a very different design than usual.
- Harley Quinn in action in a Suicide Squad Isekai video
- Kaiju No. 8: Episode 5 gets a trailer and synopsis

In the illustration above, which is definitely not recent, we see Fern combing Frieren's hair and making two braids, which she also wears. However, it seems that this change of hairstyle confused Tsukasa Abe, the manga's illustrator, a bit, since Fern's face ended up looking "cute".
This did not go unnoticed by fans, who debated whether Fern from Sousou no Frieren was gaining weight over the years in the manga:
The comments about Fern being overweight didn't stop:
- "The author is going too far in trying to provoke internet users."
- "A fat girl with questionable morals who is always angry and trying to manipulate others, that's what Fern is."
- "There's no way around it, the only people Fern has ever been involved with in her life were a drunken priest and an uninterested elf."
- "It seems Fern's special spell is to gain weight."
- "Fern gets uglier with each passing chapter, I'm glad Stark isn't very interested in her."
- "The personification of fujoshi, without a doubt."
- "Don't you think the main problem is that the nose is horribly drawn?"
- "She acts like a mother and now has the body of one."
- "Another indefinite hiatus; they should just take it off the weekly serialization schedule altogether. The authors certainly aren't ready for a job like this."
- "There is definitely a big difference between a manga artist and an anime artist."
- "Does Fern have diabetes now? I hope there's a spell for that!"
- "That's simply because the artist is bad. Fern is officially a skinny and attractive girl."
- "Fern is the kind of person who eats huge portions of food and is still hungry."
- "Even though she's fat, she's not powerful, she's fast."
Synopsis of Sousou no Frieren:
Immediately following the defeat of the demon king, the group of victorious heroes returns home, ready to part ways. Frieren, the mage, Himmel, the hero, Heiter, the priest, and Eisen, the warrior, reminisce about their decade-long journey as the time comes to say goodbye.
Finally, the entire work is based on the manga written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe. It has been serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday since April 2020.
Finally, what did you think of the comments from other fans about the character Fern?
