Synopsis

Touko, a young woman from a papermaking town, finds herself in the forbidden forest, attacked by flaming creatures, when a flame hunter rushes to protect her. Elsewhere, a young man from the capital named Koushi shelters his younger sister after losing their mother to the factory's poison.

The story takes place in a world in the chaotic post-apocalyptic period of humanity's Last War. A vast forest infested with fiery creatures and other fallen beasts covers the world, and pockets of humanity live in small, protected communities. Due to a special weapon used in the Last War, humans spontaneously burst into flames even when approaching a small source of fire.

The only reliable source of energy for humanity lies within the bodies of the fiery creatures, and the responsibility of hunting them falls to the scythe-wielding Fire Hunters who brave the depths of the great forest. Among the Fire Hunters, tales whisper of one who will be the "Lord of the Fire Hunters," one who will be able to harvest the fire from the ancient comet, the "Wandering Spark," which has been flying in the sky since its launch before the Last War but is now returning to Earth.

Staff and cast

Junji Nishimura ( Vladlove ) is directing the anime at Signal.MD ( Platinum End ), while Mamoru Oshii ( Ghost in the Shell , Vladlove ) is supervising and writing the scripts.

Hinata published the fourth book in the series in September 2020, followed by a volume of side stories in December 2021.
