The series' author, Hajime Isayama, revealed in an interview that he drew inspiration from a drunk customer he met at an internet café to create the story's titans. Realizing it was impossible to communicate with the drunk, he decided to create a world where the most terrifying monster would be humanity itself.

Another interesting fact about the work is that in Malaysia, the Titans were censored . The publisher of the manga invented a type of censorship by putting shorts on the Titans, because there are laws there that prohibit showing explicit nudity without approval.
