Kemuri Karakara launched the new short manga series in the Laughing Under the Clouds (Donten ni Warau) franchise on November 5th. The manga takes place 600 years before Laughing Under the Clouds.
He published the original Donten ni Warau manga in Mag Garden's Monthly Comic Avarus magazine from 2011-2013. He also launched the Donten ni Warau Gaiden manga on Mag Garden's "Beat's" manga website in 2014, and finished the series in February 2017.
The original manga story takes place in the 11th year of the Meiji era, when the number of people in Japan dissatisfied with the government is increasing due to the growing pace of Westernization and the prohibition of the samurai. To curb the rising crime rate, the government opens a new prison. The three Kumo siblings are entrusted with the duty of transporting these criminals to the new prison, but adventures await them along the way.
The original manga inspired a 12-episode anime in 2014 and a live-action film that premiered in March 2018. A live-action spinoff prequel (which precedes the original story) was streamed online in January 2018.
The manga Donten ni Warau Gaiden inspired a trilogy of anime film adaptations.
