The long-awaited film The Hobbit – The Desolation of Smaug has received several images, followed by a new trailer, to promote the second film, which premieres this year on December 13th. The third and final part, The Hobbit – There and Back Again , premieres on December 19th, 2014.

The three films tell a continuous story set in Middle-earth, 60 years before The Lord of the Rings. In The Hobbit, an adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's work, the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and the 13 dwarves who make up his company hire Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) for a journey to the Lonely Mountain, where they will attempt to reclaim the dwarves' homeland from the dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch). It is on this adventure that Bilbo finds the One Ring, which sets in motion the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
