The Akira manga has its return confirmed, the adaptation will be made by Warner Bros. and will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. After its production was interrupted due to budget problems in January 2013, it was shelved indefinitely. Now, with confirmation of the director's return, the project will be resumed. No further information about dates or cast was released.

Synopsis: In the film, the protagonist Kaneda (role that would be played by Hedlund), a bar owner in Neo-Manhattan, is stunned when he discovers that his brother Tetsuo (role that would be played yet) was kidnapped by government agents led by the Colonel (role that would be by Ken Watanabe). Desperate to get his brother back, Kaneda agrees to join Ky Reed (Kristen Stewart) and the underworld movement she is part of, which plans to reveal to the world what really happened to New York 30 years ago, when the city was destroyed. . Kaneda thinks these theories are nonsense, but he is shocked when he is reunited with Tetsuo and discovers that his brother has telekinetic powers – and is at the center of an event that could destroy Neo-Manhattan again.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran produce alongside Andrew Lazar. Katsuhiro Otomo, the creator of the original manga and director of the 1988 animated film, is the executive producer.
