The trajectory of Katsuhiro Otomo to Akira
The work belongs to Katsuhiro Otomo, born in 1954 in Japan. He achieved success with short stories. His first work was the Fireball , followed by Domu , which explores a conflict between two people with psychic powers, and Akira , his greatest success. After this success, he created other works, such as The Legend of Mother Sarah , for which he only wrote the script. Akira is considered a cyberpunk classic, and some time later it was adapted into a feature film in 1988, the first Japanese animation to be shown in Brazilian theaters. Unlike the animated feature, the manga delves deeper into several aspects, including social isolation within authoritarian systems with no commitment to society.
The story revolves around the city of Neo-Tokyo, built on the ruins of ancient Tokyo. A child named "Akira" was kept asleep. During this time, other survivors, part of the military program—called psychic elders in child bodies—know that one day Akira will awaken.
Throughout the journey, Tetsuo and Kaneda are members of a youth motorcycle gang. An accident awakens Tetsuo's telekinetic powers, which soon explode into a psychic revolt against friends and foes alike, transforming Kaneda from a blood brother into a mortal enemy. The terrifying potential of paranormal powers threatens the land.
