Anime audience is lower among teenagers in Japan, survey reveals

A recent survey conducted by Entmeet revealed interesting data: Teenagers, seen as the main audience for anime , are actually the age group least likely to be involved.

The research focused on ages 10 and 59 in Japan , with insights and habits into the anime community, among younger audiences. Contrary to popular beliefs, the survey results revealed that teenagers, despite being the main target audience for anime, showed the least engagement with the medium. On the other hand, the age group that watches the most anime is in their 40s.

The reason behind this anime viewership:

Entmeet suggested that the reason behind this trend could be linked to the evolving media consumption habits of Gen Z, and noted the emergence of a new phenomenon called “Taipa” (Time Performance), where individuals prioritize content that maximizes entertainment value within limited time limits.

The traditional anime format, with 30-minute episodes and 12-13 episode seasons, may not align with your preferences. Furthermore, the survey also revealed that teenagers showed a notable inclination towards anime in the action/fighting and romance genres.

The percentage of teenagers who chose romance was 30.2%. The survey found that a possible reason in the romance category would be that the COVID-19 pandemic prevented them from enjoying their youth and school life..

On the other hand, action and fighting anime stood out as the preferred anime genre overall by the surveyed public.

When it came to the gender breakdown, men were 15% more likely to watch anime than women. Genres like Action, Fighting, Science Fiction, Horror and Sports were preferred by men while women had Romance and Medical genres.

Finally, the anime audience had a total of 500 people participating, carried out between January 16, 2024 and January 29, 2024.
