Anime: Magi: Labyrinth of Magic

It's truly disheartening when anime are canceled before they can tell their entire story, leaving fans without knowing the ending. Sometimes, only one season of an anime is produced, ending on a cliffhanger and never receiving a second season.

For better or for worse, anime is a business. As frustrating as it may be, in the end, it needs to generate revenue or there's no point in continuing. But this has left many anime in limbo, desperate for a proper conclusion.

Gangsta

Gangsta

To start our list of canceled anime, we have "Gangsta," which had a lot of potential but fell short in execution. It follows Worick and Nicolas, two "brothers" who perform unique jobs for the mafia and the police. Although it was popular, the bankruptcy of Manglobe Inc. left the story incomplete, diminishing the chances of a second season.

"Highschool of the Dead" follows a group of students and their nurse during a zombie apocalypse. Besides the zombies, they also deal with social collapse. Although well-received, the series was left unfinished after the writer's death.

Prison School

Prison School

In "Prison School," Kiyoshi Fujino and his friends are the only boys at Hachimitsu Academy, Tokyo's strictest all-girls school after admitting boys. Caught spying in the bathroom, they must choose: a month of school detention or expulsion. Although the manga has a conclusion, the anime only lasted one season and was not renewed, remaining in a likely limbo.

Konjiki no Gash Bell!!

"Konjiki no Gash Bell!!" was a popular shonen series from the early 2000s. It followed the adventures of Kiyomaru and his friend Zatch Bell, as they struggled to become the King of the Mamodos. Although popular, the series was canceled without a proper ending.

Deadman Wonderland

Deadman Wonderland

"Deadman Wonderland" is an example of an anime adaptation that fails miserably. While visually stunning, the anime rushed through many plot points and omitted important characters, disappointing fans.

Code:Baker

Code:Baker

"Code: Breaker" was a popular shonen manga that received an anime adaptation after several years of publication in Weekly Shonen Magazine. Although visually appealing, the series undergoes drastic plot changes.

Bubblegum Crisis

Bubblegum Crisis

Inspired by films like Blade Runner and The Terminator, "Bubblegum Crisis" is the pinnacle of the 80s in anime form. It follows the adventures of the Knight Sabers, mercenaries with motorized exoskeletons fighting against rebellious robots. Although well-received, it was canceled before completion.

Arslan Senki (The Heroic Legend of Arslan)

Arslan Senki

"Arslan Senki" is a classic novel series by Yoshiki Tanaka, creator of "The Legend of the Galactic Heroes." The story follows the young prince Arslan, who loses his kingdom of Pars after his father's betrayal. Although it was adapted into an anime in 2015, the novel series was not yet complete at the time. The final book was published in 2017, two years after the anime ended in 2016.

Magi: Labyrinth of Magic

Magi: Labyrinth of Magic

"Magi" seemed poised to be the next big shonen battle series when it was released in 2012. With a unique setting based on Arabic mythology, it stood out from the usual shonen anime. "Magi" adopted the seasonal model, but both the main series and the Sinbad-centered spin-off ended long before the manga's conclusion.

"Baccano!" is an example of a "cult classic" in the world of anime. Although set during Prohibition in the US, the series narrates multiple seemingly unconnected events that intertwine into a larger plot. Despite excellent reviews, it was canceled after 16 episodes, leaving many storylines unresolved.
