Square Enix, together with Gangan Online web manga , will adapt the work “ Barakamon ” by author Satsuki Yoshino for the small screen.
The comedy revolves around Handa Seishuu , a young calligrapher, who is sent to an island west of Japan after a certain incident. On the very first day of his new life in the camp, Sensei, as he is now known, meets the simple and innocent Naru, a child from the island.
Yoshino launched the manga in 2009, and Square Enix released the compiled volume in September. The volumes have sold over 1.8 million copies. Yoshino will launch a spinoff manga, titled "Handa-kun," in the monthly Shonen Gangan magazine. The spinoff manga will be set six years before Barakamon, following Seishu while he was still in high school.
Kinema Citrus (Yuyushiki, Code:Breaker) will handle the animation. The anime is scheduled to premiere on Nippon TV later this year.
