Borderlands 4 arrived on the market promising to deliver an explosive experience for looter shooter fans, but the debut didn't live up to many expectations. On console versions, especially on PS5 and Xbox Series X, players face performance issues that intensify after a few hours of gameplay, turning fun into frustration.

Despite offering distinct graphics modes to balance quality and performance, the title suffers a noticeable drop in stability over time. Gearbox itself acknowledged the situation and indicated a temporary solution that reignited the debate about the game's actual optimization.

Performance drop in consoles worries gamers
Borderlands 4 offers two graphics options on consoles: performance mode, with 60 FPS and reduced visual settings, and quality mode, limited to 30 FPS but with a higher resolution. Initially, the choice seems satisfactory, however, reports indicate that after a few hours the game loses fluidity, even freezing in some cases.
This instability surprised players, as the promise was of an optimized experience from launch. Discussions on forums like Reddit reveal that the problem is not restricted to a specific console, but manifests itself in different versions, especially the PS5 Pro, which should deliver the most solid performance.
Restarting the console is a temporary solution
Gearbox has confirmed that the problem is real and related to prolonged gaming sessions. According to Randy Pitchford, CEO of the studio, the way to work around the bug, for now, is to end the game and restart the console. This measure temporarily solves the problem, but generates dissatisfaction among players, who consider it unacceptable to have to interrupt the experience in 2025 to maintain the stability of such a highly anticipated release.

Suspected memory leak and expected update
Experts and gamers speculate that the problems may be linked to a possible memory leak, as performance progressively degrades over time. Gearbox has not yet confirmed the exact source of the error, but the community hopes that future updates will definitively fix the flaw.
Meanwhile, the makeshift solution of restarting the console remains the only viable alternative. This scenario reignites debates about the quality of optimizations in major releases and the pressure for patches soon after launch.
