Japanese publishers Kodansha , Shueisha , Shogakukan and Kadokawa filed suit against American company Cloudflare . According to information, the companies allege that Cloudflare distributes data to pirated manga , infringing the copyrights of publishers in Japan.
Therefore, the companies are seeking an injunction of around 460 million yen ( about US$4 million ) in compensation for damages.
Kodansha Cloudflare 's policy of requiring only an email address to register for free allows pirate sites to hide their identity.
Reports from the Asahi Shimbun newspaper and the Kyodo news service stated that Cloudflare has contracts with major piracy sites to distribute data from servers in Japan, even though the administrators of the piracy sites are overseas.
Finally, the sites reportedly distribute around 4,000 manga titles. The most popular are One Piece , Attack on Titan and Kingdom with more than 300 million hits per month.
