Dandadan: Anime is censored in China

Dandadan anime is generating controversy among fans due to censorship in their screening in China , causing a flood of comments on social networks.

The images show that the character most affected is Seiko Ayase , the protagonist's grandmother, with the appearance of a young woman, but drastically modified in the version broadcast on Chinese platforms.

The most obvious change is the removal of the Seiko cigarette, replaced by a palette. Additionally, the original costume, which showed part of her cleavage, is altered to cover it completely. This type of censorship is nothing new in China, where there is strong regulation over content displayed on platforms like Bilibili. However, this adaptation drew attention due to the way in which these modifications were implemented.

Another altered scene shows protagonist Momo Ayase , who, in the original version, the aliens abduct while she is wearing only underwear. In the censored version, Momo appears wearing a sports outfit.

Fans of the series reacted in a mixed way, with some comments such as:

“If they wanted to censor it, they could have blurred it, because it looked terrible.”

“Context: the anime is also shown on the Chinese platform Bilibili and has to follow the censorship rules there.”

Despite criticism, censorship of anime and films in China is a recurring practice, and Dandadan is just the latest example of how strict local regulations alter the perception of foreign works. Finally, even with negative reactions, censorship continues to be a reality for productions that seek to reach the Chinese public.
