In a recent interview, Akio Iyoku , executive producer of Dragon Ball, revealed details about the development of Dragon Ball Daima . Contrary to what many fans imagined, the anime was not created as a special project to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the series. However, it eventually became an unexpected commemorative milestone.

The interview, originally published on the Japanese website Akita Sakigake Shipimo and translated by @/supachronicles no X (former Twitter), however, brought out this revelation. Iyoku explained that Dragon Ball Daima was not planned to celebrate the franchise's four decades.
It was not done specifically for the birthday, ”he said,“ but I'm very happy that he has coincided with that date. It's amazing to see how long the series already lasts, but for us the focus has always been on - thinking about the next project and what comes next. That's how we got here.
According to the producer, when trying to force a work to fit into a specific milestone, the result is not always satisfactory. In Daima , it all happened naturally. However, the anime, which premiered in October 2024, was already under development for six years and was initially known as Dragon Ball Magic . Interestingly, the project has similarities with Super Dragon Ball Heroes , the anime web that promoted the game of cards and video games Dragon Ball Heroes.
Love letter for Dragon Ball GT fans
Although they did not create Daima as a tribute at the 40th anniversary of Dragon Ball , he became a kind of "love letter" for the franchise. Inspired by Dragon Ball GT, the anime brought even a version of Goku's iconic Super Saiyan 4 in episode 18. This connection with the past, coupled with a narrative full of mysteries and action, won the fans.
Now the big question is: would there be another project under development to celebrate the 40th anniversary? Iyoku gave no details, but said that more news is coming.
"We want Dragon Ball to continue for many decades," he said.
Meanwhile, Crunchyroll releases new episodes of Dragon Ball Daima every Friday. The plot follows Goku and his friends, that a conspiracy transforms into children's versions. To reverse the situation, they depart on a journey to the “world of demons,” where they find Glorio, a mysterious young man.
