The Japan Film Rating and Classification Organization (Eirin) had posted a summary of Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time on its list of films being shown, although the film's entry on January 18 is no longer on the list as of Tuesday night.

The film will be two hours and 34 minutes long and rated G (suitable for all audiences). The three previous films in the current tetralogy were also rated G.

The anime studio Khara posted on Twitter in October formally denying that the final film would be six hours long, after people misinterpreted a screenshot posted earlier.

Furthermore, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 was scheduled to premiere on January 23, but the staff reported that they are postponing the film again due to the new state of emergency declared in Japan on January 8. Moreover, the film had previously been postponed due to COVID-19 . The film was originally scheduled to premiere in Japan on June 27, 2020.

Hikaru Utada returns to perform the theme song "One Last Kiss" for the film.

Finally, the first three films of the tetralogy, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are [Not] Alone, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can [Not] Advance, and Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, premiered in 2007, 2009, and 2012, respectively.
