Evangelion Director's Message Predicted Anime Industry's Decline

Genesis Evangelion animation director Hideaki Anno said that the anime industry would face a major decline in the future. Now, eight years later, some fans have recalled the director's words and believe he was right due to the coincidences that have occurred so far.

Evangelion Director's Message Predicted Anime Industry's Decline

Check it out:

Hideaki Anno originally commented on this future decline of the Japanese animation industry to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti . According to him, Japan will no longer be the center of animation in the future.

"Japanese animation is in decline. It has already peaked. After its collapse, there will likely be a resurgence. I don't think animation will disappear, but perhaps the conditions that have existed up until now, which have led to the creation of interesting projects, will no longer exist. Japan will simply cease to be the center of global animation. Perhaps within five years, Taiwan will become that center."

Fans pointed to the impact of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic as an example of this message, as it was a crisis that affected many people and businesses, including Japan. During this crisis, all planned animations at the time were derailed, and the number of productions was significantly reduced. Thus, the pandemic affected the deadlines and quality of animations five years after Anno's statement.

Additionally, the film Evangelion: 3.0+1.01: The Hope has also been linked to the director's words as part of the predicted "downfall." For fans, the final film in the Rebuild of Evangelion series may have influenced the director's perspective without him realizing it.

As the director's words are associated with these events, some fans believe he was right about the decline. Currently, Anno is focusing on the live-action film market.
