Director Zach Cregger has confirmed that the next Resident Evil film will take a completely new direction, leaving out classic characters from the franchise. The idea is to create a new storyline, set in the universe of Capcom's games, but without repeating previously explored narratives. Among the absentees is the beloved Leon S. Kennedy.

Cregger states that the production will be faithful to the rules and atmosphere of the games, while also featuring new protagonists and challenges. The film, scheduled for release in September 2026, aims to offer fans a unique experience on the big screen.

Directors are committed to innovation within the Resident Evil universe.

According to the director, the decision not to feature Leon or other classic heroes doesn't mean a departure from the source material. On the contrary, the plot will seek to capture the essence of tension and survival that made the franchise famous. By opting for new characters, the film leaves room for surprises and avoids direct comparisons with the stories already established in the games.

Focus on the suspense and horror atmosphere characteristic of the series

Cregger emphasized that he aims to recreate the intense sensation of video games on screen, where players find themselves trapped in dark and threatening environments. The promise is a script that leads the audience through an escalating journey of danger, exploring the fear of the unknown and the fight for survival.

New reboot under the Sony Pictures label

The project marks the second Resident Evil cinematic reboot, now under the supervision of Sony Pictures. In addition to directing, Cregger is writing the script, and actor Austin Abrams, known for his role in Euphoria, is expected to play the lead role. The release is scheduled for September 18, 2026, and the film is expected to stand out precisely because it doesn't attempt to replicate familiar plots.

A love letter to fans of the franchise

For the filmmaker, this new approach is not only a creative strategy, but also a gesture of respect towards the fanbase. By preserving the essence of the Resident Evil universe while simultaneously presenting something new, the production aims to please both veterans and new viewers. The intention is to deliver a story that connects with the atmosphere of the games, but offers a fresh and surprising perspective on the horror that defines the saga.
