Filming for the live-action adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist is in full swing and new behind-the-scenes images have been released.

Behind-the-scenes photos from the live-action film were revealed by the Italian newspaper La Nazione and show scenes from filming in the charming city of Volterra, Italy. Among the photos, actor Ryosuke Yamada —known for his role as Nagisa in Assassination Classroom —stands out, already in character as the alchemist Edward Elric. The characterization is striking for its fidelity to the original protagonist's appearance.

Fullmetal Alchemist – Live-Action Filming in Italy and Japan

Filming began in Italy in early June and will later move to Japan. According to the schedule, the team will wrap filming in the second half of August. The film's release is scheduled for winter 2017 in Japan.

Although the manga presents Edward as a 15-year-old, director Fumihiko Sori revealed that the character will be 20 in the film version. This decision aims to better adapt the narrative to the film format, respecting the essence of the story.

Director promises cutting-edge technique

"It's my greatest desire to turn this wonderful story into a film, and it's no exaggeration to say I'm living for this reason. I want to create a wonderful film that will use techniques that challenge Hollywood," Sori declared enthusiastically. Although the task is daunting, he stated that he aims to create something remarkable with techniques that can rival Hollywood productions.

Furthermore, the choice of Italy as the initial setting is no coincidence. The city's classic ambiance helps bring the fantastical universe of Fullmetal Alchemist to life with authenticity and visual depth.
