Production IG acquired the rights to FLCL ( Furi Kuri ) from the famous Gainax (Neon Genesis Evangelion), which IG itself worked on at the time. IG's plan is to make the most of the title, including making a remake of the anime.

The anime was the first directorial work of Kazuya Tsurumaki , who served as an assistant director on Neon Genesis Evangelion. The series was originally released as an OVA on six DVDs in 2000. The story was also published as a two-volume manga by artist Hajime Ueda, and a three-volume light novel by Yoji Enokido (who also wrote the anime's script).

The story takes place in a sleepy town called Mabase, practically forgotten and "without anything interesting." In the center of town, there's a huge factory (the town's economy) shaped like an iron called Medical Mechanica. The problem is that after the factory's emergence, adults began to become "retarded" because of the white smoke that comes out daily from inside the factory, almost completely covering the town.
