Production IG acquired the rights to FLCL ( Furi Kuri ) which was with the famous Gainax (Neon Genesis Evangelion) which IG itself worked on at the time. IG's idea is to make the most of the title, including making a remake of the anime.
The anime was the first directorial work of “ Kazuya Tsurumaki ”, who served as an assistant director on Neon Genesis Evangelion. The series was originally published in OVA format on six DVDs in 2000. The story was also published in two manga volumes by artist Hajime Ueda, and a three-volume light novel by Yoji Enokido (who also wrote the anime script).
The story takes place in a quiet town called Mabase, practically forgotten and “without anything interesting”. In the center of the city there is a huge factory (the city's economy) shaped like an iron called Medical Mechanica. The problem is that after the emergence of this industry, adults began to become “retarded” because of the white smoke that comes out of the factory every day and almost completely covers the city.
