On Wednesday (the 10th), MyAnimeList was indeed hacked and the site remains under maintenance to resolve the problem. Before the site went into maintenance, some users noticed the cause of the alarm. As the screenshot shows, the hacker changed the anime names to “LET'S ALL LOVE LAIN”, which means “Let's all love Lain”.
This message refers directly to Lain Iwakura, the protagonist of the anime/manga Serial Experiments Lain. Furthermore, visitors to the site noticed that the ratings for this anime were altered, resulting in higher scores. In other words, the hacker essentially manipulated MyAnimeList to favor Serial Experiments Lain, which appears to be their favorite anime.
Synopsis of Serial Experiments Lain:
Serial Experiments Lain is a psychological and science fiction anime known for exploring philosophical and existential themes. In the story, Lain begins receiving messages from a classmate who committed suicide, revealing a hidden reality in the virtual world called "Wired." As Lain delves deeper into this digital world, she confronts questions about identity, consciousness, and her own reality.
