Anno commented in an interview about his career and his new exhibition in Nagoya , Japan . When asked if he wanted to make sequels to Evangelion or if he preferred someone else to do them, he replied as follows:
“Hmm, something like that might exist. The prospect of an Evangelion sequel directed by someone other than myself could exist. I haven't decided yet, or rather, it's better for the work to have a high degree of freedom. Whether it will be commercially viable or interesting depends on the content. I'm not saying I won't do another one or anything like that.”.
Although an Evangelion sequel would certainly generate great interest among fans, other answers from Anno in the same interview suggest that he would not be the one directing it . Anno is currently involved in a special project for the anniversary of "Space Battleship Yamato," and states that this represents a break from filmmaking.

He emphasized that he was "mentally and physically exhausted" after having made "Thrice Upon a Time" in 2021, "Shin Ultraman" in 2022, and "Shin Kamen Rider" in 2023. Anno is known in the industry for his high standards and for being involved in all aspects of a title.
"Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time" is the final installment in the franchise, marking the end of the "Rebuild of Evangelion" tetralogy. A 2021 interview suggested that any continuation would not be a sequel to 3.0+1.0, with Anno stating:
"Right now, I don't feel like I'm going to pick up the story where I left off.".
Although the news of a possible return of "Neon Genesis Evangelion" should have been unanimously received as positive, in reality there were mixed reactions due to fans' belief that there is nothing left to tell.
