Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan's most respected and influential animators, having co-founded Studio Ghibli. He also directed Spirited Away , Princess Mononoke , and Howl's Moving Castle . His latest film, therefore, represents a significant milestone for his career and his fans.
The team of animators and producers worked with Miyazaki on the development of How Do You Live? since 2016. However, the film never received a trailer, and no details about its plot or visuals were revealed before its release. The only thing Studio Ghibli released was a poster.
According to Toshio Suzuki , the decision to keep the film's details secret was intentional. He said in an interview that Miyazaki wanted to keep details of the film secret to build suspense.
"I've been making films ever since, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and that poster is the first thing Miyazaki Hayao actually complimented me on. He said, 'Suzuki-san, this is amazing.'
He said it was the best thing I've ever done. That was my tip. 'So, let's do it!' No trailers. Absolutely no TV commercials. We'll do it all. No newspaper ads!"
Synopsis:
How Do You Live? was inspired by Genzaburo Yoshino 1937 novel. The book follows the journey of Copper, a 15-year-old boy who goes on a journey to discover the meaning of life. However, Miyazaki has stated that his film will tell a different story.
