Attack On Titan ( Shingeki no Kyojin ) creator Hajime Isayama discussed the reasoning behind the anime's dark conclusion. Beware, spoilers for the final season below!

The anime's final episode aired on Saturday, November 4, and saw the end of the Rumbling following the death of Eren Yeager. In the epilogue, a group of far-right Jaegerists form a militia to protect Eldia, suggesting that the same cycle of conflict is about to repeat itself.
In the closing credits, the story progresses through hundreds of years as society and technology develop, culminating in a nuclear explosion that seemingly decimates civilization.
Isayama said it would have been “ unbelievable ” to end with a happy resolution in an interview with The New York Times about the story's ending.
“ I suppose there could have been a happy ending, where the war ended and everything was fine ,” Isayama said. “ I think this could have been possible. At the same time, the end of the fight and the conflict itself seems somewhat unbelievable. “
“It kind of seems like it's not even believable. It's simply not plausible in the world we're living in now. And unfortunately, I had to give up on that kind of happy ending .“
Finally, Hajime Isayama launched the manga in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shounen Magazine in 2009, and finished the serialization in April 2021. Finally, the 34th and final volume of the manga arrived in June 2021.
Synopsis
After more than a century of peace, humans were faced with the sudden appearance of the Titans in the Shiganshina district. Eren Yeager, Mikasa Ackerman – his adopted sister – and their childhood friend, Armin Arlert, witness the appearance of a 60-meter Titan, the Colossal Titan, and another smaller one, the Armored Titan, which open a breach in Wall Maria. As a result, the Titans invade the city and wreak havoc, including the death of Eren's mother, who is devoured before his eyes. However, Hannes catches him and takes him away from Eren and Mikasa's house. Years later, he decides to take revenge and kill all the Titans, eventually joining the Survey Corps.
