Anime and manga in this market today. However, Masao Maruyama , the founder of studio MAPPA and Madhouse , believes that China could take over the anime market depending on the condition they reach in the future.
Japan – MAPPA founder says China can dominate the anime market
Masao Maruyama said in a recent interview on AFP News that Japanese animation studios are too focused on standard commercialization. Unlike Japan, Chinese animators are always innovating in the market, but they are limited in their creations due to the country's severe restrictions.
Check it out:
“In Japan, people are no longer trained in animation. The only reason China hasn't caught up to Japan yet is because of a bunch of restrictions placed on free speech there. If more freedom is released, Japan will be overtaken in a short time.”
According to Maruyama, the Japanese industry is betting too much on profitable anime genres, such as those starring cute and pretty girls. However, this will not overshadow other global works coming from America and France. The founder also warns that the industry has become so obsessed with making money that it no longer encourages its animators to be innovative.
“Creating works is challenging yourself to do something new, regardless of what you have said in the past. That makes him selfish in a way, and it’s a trait I inherited in its pure form.”
Chinese animations, also known as Donghua, are becoming better known in the market, but their creators have many limitations in the creative process, as Maruyama says.
