Of the 400 respondents aged 18 to 29, 49.4% said they did not want children, the highest percentage in the last three annual pregnancy surveys conducted by Rohto Pharmaceutical.
By gender, it was found that 53.0% of men and 45.6% of women are not interested in becoming mothers , citing reasons such as high cost and anxiety about Japan's future.
The results of the survey conducted in January came after government data showed that the number of babies born in the country last year fell below 800,000 for the first time since records began in 1899. To reverse the trend of falling birth rates in a rapidly aging country, the government launched the Child and Family Agency in April, tasked with overseeing child policies.
According to the study, which also included 800 couples aged 25 to 44, 48.1% of married men and women who wanted children cooperated with their partners' fertility efforts.
Finally, this number is a significant drop from the 60.3% in the fiscal year 2020 survey.
