And now for some sad news from Japan. Japan Content International Distribution Association (CODA) released an article this week citing losses of between 1.9 and 2.2 trillion yen (US$14.2 to 16.5 billion) in 2021 due to piracy of Japanese entertainment, including manga, anime , music, and video games. According to reports, the figure marks a fivefold increase compared to the association's previous study in 2019.
Japan – Piracy affected Japanese entertainment by billions
Check it out:
The organization calculated that anime and other video content lost 906.5 billion to 1.4 trillion yen (about $6.8 to $10.5 billion) to piracy, while manga and other published media lost 395.2 billion to 831.1 billion yen (about $3 to $6.2 billion).
Furthermore, CODA attributed the increase in piracy to people spending more time indoors due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the proliferation of streaming services. Therefore, the Nikkei Asia newspaper stated that this figure exceeds the value of the entire licensed content market, which is estimated at 600 billion yen (approximately US$5.19 billion) annually.
