According to the online edition of a Chinese newspaper, Makoto Shinkai has grossed a total of 800 million yuan (equivalent to 15.7 billion yen) in Beijing cinemas this week. However, the film's record surpassed even that of Kimi no Na wa ( Your Name ), which grossed approximately 576 million yuan during its run in China.

The film The First Slam Dunk, based on the manga by Takehiko Inoue , also performed well, grossing a total of 600 million yuan in its first two weeks of release up to April 20th.

Therefore, in November 2022, a public opinion survey was conducted in Japan and China by Genron NPO, and 62.6% of the 1,528 Chinese respondents stated that they had a negative impression of Japan. However, one of the respondents commented on the opinion of Chinese fans regarding anime.

"Many Chinese people prioritize their hobbies and favorite books over politics."

Furthermore, on the opening day of The First Slam Dunk, a 30-year-old man from Beijing went to the cinema wearing a basketball uniform from the anime he loves so much and spoke about how excited he was.

“I like the original manga and I’ve also seen the anime. It’s a special anime work for people our age. I’m very happy to see the new movie.”
