According to the online edition of a Chinese newspaper, Makoto Shinkai earned a total of 800 million yuan (equivalent to 15.7 billion yen) in Beijing cinemas in China until this week. However, the film's record surpassed even that of Kimi no Na wa ( Your Name ), which grossed around 576 million yuan during its screening in China.
The film The First Slam Dunk, based on the manga by Takehiko Inoue , also did well, earning a total of 600 million yuan in its first two weeks of release until April 20.
Therefore, in November 2022, a public opinion survey was carried out in Japan and China by Genron NPO and 62.6% of the 1,528 Chinese people interviewed said they had a bad impression of Japan. However, one of the interviewees commented on what the fans' opinion is Chinese people in relation to anime.
“Many Chinese prioritize their hobbies and favorite works over politics.”
Additionally, on the opening day of The First Slam Dunk, a 30-year-old man from Beijing went to the cinema wearing a basketball uniform from the anime he loves so much and talked about how excited he was.
“I like the original manga and I also saw the anime. It's a special anime work for people our age. I’m very happy to see the new film.”
