Japanese anime films are a huge success in China

All otakus know that China is notorious for censoring Japanese animation, but the country also has a strong legion of anime fans . A clear testament to this is the box office success achieved by the Japanese anime films Suzume no Tojimari and The First Slam Dunk in Chinese theaters.

According to the online edition of a Chinese newspaper, Makoto Shinkai has grossed a total of 800 million yuan (equivalent to 15.7 billion yen) in Beijing cinemas as of this week. However, the film's record has even surpassed that of Kimi no Na wa ( Your Name ), which grossed around 576 million yuan during its theatrical run in China.

The film The First Slam Dunk, based on the manga by Takehiko Inoue , also performed well, grossing a total of 600 million yuan in its first two weeks of release as of April 20.

Therefore, in November 2022, a public opinion survey was conducted in Japan and China by Genron NPO, and 62.6% of the 1,528 Chinese respondents stated that they had a negative impression of Japan. However, one of the respondents commented on Chinese fans' opinions of anime.

“Many Chinese prioritize their hobbies and favorite works over politics.”

Additionally, on the day of the premiere of The First Slam Dunk, a 30-year-old man from Beijing went to the cinema wearing a basketball uniform from the anime he loves and talked about how excited he was.

"I like the original manga and I've also seen the anime. It's a special anime for people our age. I'm very excited to see the new film."
