Jujutsu Kaisen – Animators vent about MAPPA's chaotic production

Jujutsu Kaisen has become one of the most popular animes today, so it didn't take long for it to become one of the flagship projects of the MAPPA . However, some animators involved in the anime's second season spoke out about the studio's excessive working conditions. They took the matter to X (Twitter) after signing an NDA (non-disclosure agreement), which generated much dissatisfaction among the team.

According to the source, the contract in question requires all Jujutsu Kaisen animators to maintain confidentiality regarding the production. However, it appears that much of the team was unhappy with the arrangement and took their complaints online.

“I have nothing to lose, so if you want to take me to court for complaining, I accept.”

"Silencing the team from talking about how terrible the working conditions are is ironic. I don't care at this point because, yes, the schedule is beyond terrible, and the fact that the work is done with any level of competence is incredible. I will not compromise my health for a job that doesn't cover my rent, much less any other expenses. My main job and my overall well-being mean more to me than the fear of being blacklisted."

Furthermore, they also claim that the studio's work environment is chaotic, the pay is unfair, and the work hours are excessively harsh. Despite the situation, MAPPA has not released any response to this chaos.

Synopsis:

Ever since high school student Yuji Itadori became involved with the secret society of sorcerers called Jujutsu Kaisen, he has been training to confront the curses, evil beings that haunt the living world. Therefore, to protect his friends and innocent people, Yuji decides to join the jujutsu sorcerers as a student-in-training under the tutelage of Satoru Gojo, the strongest sorcerer of all.

The anime's first season premiered in October 2020 and featured 24 episodes animated by MAPPA. The studio also animated the film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, set a few years before the main series and telling the story of young Yuta Okkotsu.

I think it's like this: if you're good at something, they'll milk you for all the cheap money. However, it's also a stalemate for the employer. I'm a programming student, and I see that the market is declining more and more, with fewer competent professionals, so the only thing left is to abuse the good ones that remain. I'm not justifying this, because in the case of MAPPA, it's pure bullshit. How can a studio with major projects, which likely generated a lot of revenue, have low salaries that don't even cover rent? Ideally, the best option would be to hire more professionals, but there aren't enough competent ones. So, the solution would be to have a good conversation with the current professionals and reach a "coexistence" agreement that's convenient for everyone.
