The June issue of Mag Garden's Monthly Comic Garden published the final chapter on Thursday of Kemuri Karakara's Utakata ni Warau manga . The manga's compiled volume will be released on May 31.
Kemuri Karakara launched the new short manga series in the Laughing Under the Clouds (Donten ni Warau) franchise on November 5. The manga is set 600 years before Laughing Under the Clouds.
He published the original manga Donten ni Warau in Mag Garden's Monthly Comic Avarus from 2011-2013. He also released the Donten ni Warau Gaiden manga on Mag Garden's “Beat's” manga site in 2014, and finished the series in February 2017.
The manga's original story takes place in the 11th year of the Meiji era, when the number of people in Japan who feel dissatisfaction with the government is increasing due to the increasing speed of Westernization and the ban on samurai. To contain the rising crime rate, the government opens a new prison. The three brothers of the Kumo family are entrusted with the duty of transporting these criminals to the new prison, but adventures await them along the way.
The original manga inspired a 12-episode anime in 2014 and a live-action film that premiered in March 2018. A live-action spinoff prequel work (which precedes the original story) aired online in January 2018.
The manga Donten ni Warau Gaiden inspired a trilogy of anime film adaptations.
- Donten ni Warau Gaiden: Ketsubetsu, Yamainu no Chikai (Departing, Yamainu's Oath), the first film, which premiered in Japan in December 2017.
- Donten ni Warau Gaiden: Shukumei, Sōtō no Fūma (Fate, The Double-Headed Fūma), the second film, premiered in Japan in June 2018.
- And the third film, Donten ni Warau Gaiden: Ōka, Tenbō no Kakyū (Cherry Blossom, the Bridge of Heavenly Wishes), opened in Japan on September 1 and was shown for two weeks.
