Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Fans in Japan start to hate 'Maomao'

Rafael Shinzo
My name is Rafael Alves, known as Shinzo. I created the AnimeNew website in 2009 to offer news about anime, manga, and games directly from Japan.

It seems a hate campaign has emerged on Japanese social media against the character 'Maomao', the protagonist of the anime "Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries)". Groups of anime fans are appearing on social media expressing opinions contrary to the majority.

The series continues to be one of the surprises of the season since the fall of 2023 (between October and December), remaining at the top of the popularity rankings alongside “Sousou no Frieren (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End)”.

However, a social media post began to criticize Maomao, the protagonist of the anime Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, saying: “A girl who deliberately makes herself ugly just by getting freckles. Who gets upset when a tall, rich, and handsome man attacks her. Who is scary when she gets angry and often threatens women much bigger and more powerful than her. The idea is too greedy to be tolerated, does anyone relate?

Many of the highlighted elements were what made Maomao from the anime Kusuriya no Hitorigoto one of the most beloved female characters of her season. But what did the group of people who call themselves fans say about it?

  • It's like I'm watching a story created on Twitter. There's no reason for someone like Jinshi to fall in love with a woman who is ugly both physically and mentally.
  • I think she's cute, so I can forgive her personality.
  • It seems that Maomao is the epitome of everything that is wrong with women today.
  • I was able to tolerate her during the first few episodes, but after the freckle thing was revealed, I found her unpleasant.
  • Well, this was an anime originally intended for women. There's nothing they can do about it.
  • I don't understand what the problem is with messing with women taller than you.
  • Just as you project yourself onto harem protagonists, female otaku project themselves onto Maomao.
  • I gave up as soon as I came across the manga version. "This is the kind of thing that fujoshi are promoting.".
  • Despite his extensive knowledge, he remains a virgin and is very popular among non-men.
  • You have the sensitivity of a primary school child.
  • In the opinion of female otaku, she is the ideal woman they aspire to be.
  • Anime aimed at weak men are generally equally unpleasant.
  • I was interested in the mystery theme, but it ended up becoming a female fantasy.

Synopsis:

The story takes place in a large country in the middle of the continent. Mao-mao is a young woman who works as a pharmacist in a Hanamachi (a neighborhood with many brothels). She is kidnapped and sold as a servant to the palace. But she hides the fact that she is a pharmacist; she works very quietly, waiting for the new year to arrive. One day, however, she hears a rumor from a coworker that the emperor's children are dying one after another, and using her knowledge of pharmacy, she discovers the cause.

Therefore, Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) began its publication in October 2011 in Shousetsuka ni Narou and its physical publication began in August 2014.
