A Kyoto court sentenced Shinji Aoba , the man responsible for the arson at the Kyoto Animation in 2019. Therefore, in the fire, 36 people died, and 32 were injured, making it one of the deadliest murders in Japan's post-war period. .

The case happened in 2019 and gained worldwide repercussion. Shinji Aoba admitted to having caused the fire and said he regretted the crime. At the time, Shinji participated in a KyoAni novel contest and was rejected in the first round of selection. Eight months before the fire, a random scene from the anime Tsurune aired, in which Aoba accuses the studio of stealing his idea, which was the motivation for his actions. The studio denied plagiarism.
Therefore, the scene itself was of the characters buying meat at a discount in episode 5.
The lawyers tried to reduce the sentence or acquit Shinji, claiming that he was not well psychologically on the day he committed the crime, but their attempts were in vain.
