On Thursday, the KyotoAnimation (known for Koe no Katachi, among other works) suffered a major fire that has left 36 dead so far.
A 41-year-old man entered the animation studio building, threw a flammable substance inside, and set it on fire. He injured himself in the process and was taken into custody at a hospital.
Around 70 people were in the Kyoto Animation studios at approximately 10:30 AM local time (10:30 PM Brasília time) when an unidentified man entered the three-story building and threw a flammable liquid. During the act, he shouted: "Die.".
Kyoto Animation, better known as KyoAni, has approximately 160 employees. Founded in 1981, the traditional studio produces animated cartoons, creates characters, and designs merchandise based on its series inspired by famous Japanese manga. Among its productions are "K-ON!", "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya," and "Lucky Star."
